Cupcake Café Opens in Andover

New cupcake bakery offers a variety of cupcakes and bubble teas.

Enjoy Christmas decorated cupcakes and wreaths made from cornflakes from Pink Tree Sweets, 89 Main Street, Andover Village Square.

The new cupcake bakery opened a couple of weeks ago in the space next to Lantern Brunch, and across from Andover Bookstore.

Owner Annie Wu, Topsfield, said she always wanted to open a cupcake bakery and cafe. After two years of planning, taking classes, and researching the business, she said she chose Andover because she likes the town, and her daughter attends Pike School.

Prior to opening the bakery, Wu said she made cupcake cakes for weddings and charity events. She recently displayed her cupcake cakes and towers at a Bloomingdales fashion charity event.

While the menu boasts over 25 varieties of cupcakes, not all flavors are available every day. However, customers can choose from a good selection from the case next to the counter. All items including financiers, little French cakes, range in price from $2.49-$2.99. What sets Pink Tree Sweets apart from other cupcake bakeries are the natural ingredients and buttercream frosting, she explained.

But not all of the cupcakes are sweet. Wu said. “We've made bacon and egg, spinach and feta, and chicken pot pie cupcakes”.  She said they would be adding more lunch items in January.

Customers have their favorites, and Wu said the most popular flavors are their version of “Hostess” cupcakes, a dark chocolate cake combined with Italian meringue buttercream, Boston Cream, and Key Lime. The Cookies & Cream cupcakes are very popular with kids, she said.

The bakery, which has been mindfully decorated, even has pink flowers and lighted pink reeds set in a silver urn. With seating for 12, Wu said they also have Wi-Fi and music. In the short time she has been open, she has seen parents bring their children in for a treat after a Tiny Tunes session, and students come in after school to socialize over cupcakes, she explained.

In addition to serving fresh roasted coffee, tea and hot cocoa, Wu, originally from Taiwan, offers Bubble Tea and Bubble Tea Smoothies with or without the tapioca.

Special orders are available upon request, and cupcake cakes and cupcakes for special occasions are baked to order, with three days advance notice, she said.  Wu has other bakers and a decorator who work with her in the bakery.

Wu said for right now, the hours are Sundays-Thursdays and Saturdays, 9am-6pm, and Fridays, 9am-8pm. She said she expects to be open later in the spring and summer months, and would like to book birthday parties on Sundays.
