Centennial Dance at the Balmoral Spa

This event is a one night only, flash from the past, held on Friday, June 3.

Back in the day, the Balmoral Spa at 305 North Main Street was home to the village drug store, barbershop, hairdresser, offices and public hall. It may have been better known, however, as the local gathering place for the young men and women of the 1930s to enjoy each other’s company and dance the night away.

The old world scene was one of romance, social graces and youthful delight.

Friday’s dance revival, hosted by the Andover Historical Society as part of their 100th year celebration, will be held outside on the grounds of the old Balmoral Spa, now the Tactician Building, on North Main Street from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The theme for the night will be “Dancing Under the Stars” and is sure to be a lovely evening to remember.

The Andover Historical Society is seeking a broad representation of guests to attend this very special occasion and anticipate a gathering of approximately 150 attendees. It will be held rain or shine inside a secured tent and adults of all ages are welcome and encouraged to plan for this “nod to the past.” The event will feature entertainment from The Tony D. Band, a twelve instrument big band, and will include complimentary appetizers accompanied by a cash bar.

“The guiding principle for all of our centennial events is celebrating 100 years of telling Andover’s history; we wanted to make sure that every event that we sponsor throughout our centennial year focuses on a different aspect of Andover History.” said Elaine Clements, Executive Director at the Andover Historical Society, “This activity is one that so many people still remember today, so we wanted to bring back that memory and a part of Andover that was once incredibly popular.”

The mood for the evening is expected to be jovial and nostalgic as members of the Andover Historical Society and Tactician work to recreate the atmosphere of the Balmoral dances of the early and mid twentieth century.

”The old pictures that we have of the Balmoral Spa dances show white lattice work features and strung lights and we are looking to bring back that feel.” said Clements, “The people at Tactician have been absolutely fantastic and one of their crew members is building a lattice work archway so that when people come into the dance they will walk through the archway, along the red carpet to the tent which is strung with white lights.”

Don’t miss this opportunity to step back in time. While the music, dancing and whimsical atmosphere will be reminiscent of times past, attire for the occasion can be fashion forward. Guests are welcome to attend in comfortable dress as they would for any evening out in 2011.

Tickets are $45 per person or $120 for a couple’s package which includes two tickets and a photo. A professional photographer will be on site to capture this fun evening for you and your guest. A green screen background will be used to allow photos subjects to choose from a series of historical background images provided by the historical society. Keep in mind to steer clear of green clothing which will not properly photograph in front of the green screen.

Advanced reservations are appreciated and you can purchase tickets online at www.andoverhistorical.com/dance or call 978-475-2236.
