Welcome to the second part of a three part series that looks back on the 2011 Andover High School fall athletic season.

Today we look at the field hockey and volleyball teams. Yesterday we featured the soccer teams, and tomorrow we'll assess the football team.

Field Hockey

Grade: A+

Comments:

The field hockey team is like an overachieving or gifted student. There is no other grade for a state champion, let alone one that successfully defends its title from the previous season.

Andover has not lost a game since 2009. Last year’s team won the state championship with an undefeated and untied season.

This year’s edition of the team had a pair of ties during the regular season but still managed to cruise through the MIAA Division 1 North playoffs.

Andover beat Westford, Lincoln-Sudbury, and Weston to advance into the north final. A 1-0 victory over Acton-Boxboro got them into the state tournament.

Shutout wins over Duxbury and Longmeadow gave Andover the gold and a rare repeat of a state title.

Volleyball

Grade: A-

Comments:

The girls volleyball team had another successful season. A tough team in Central Catholic kept them from achieving at an "A" or "A+" level.

Andover cruised through the regular season by going 20-3. All three of their losses came against Central Catholic, the team that would keep them out of the state tournament.

Andover cruised over Masconomet and North Andover in the MIAA Division 1 North playoffs. Both games were 3-0 shutouts.

It was in the north final that the Golden Warriors finally hit the wall and were ousted by the Red Raiders after a 3-0 defeat.
