Living Healthy and Local Crafts: Seniors in Spring

Find a wide selection of programs and activities at the Andover Senior Center.

Spring is here and the Andover Senior Center has a whole new set of activities that not just seniors can enjoy. From lectures about climate change to going green to the Civil War, the Senior Center brings a whole level of unique programming for the residents of Andover.

Spring Craft Fair: Our spring craft fair is wrapping up on Friday, April 22. We have a large assortment of jewelry, flower arrangements, Easter basket items and gifts.  This money goes directly to running programs for the center.

High Tea and History: Wednesday, April 20 at 2 p.m. Free.  April 20, 2011 – Don Robb – “Trains.” Do you remember your first train ride or have a train story to tell?  Come to the  High Tea & History to learn about trains in Andover.  Andover historian Don Robb will give an overview and then open the floor up for stories and reminiscences.

Coral Reefs and the threat of Global Climate Change. April 211:30p.m. Free. This presentation will cover the potential impact of global climate change and global warming including the dynamics of both processes on coral reefs. Findings from the Pew Report on Global Climate Change will also be touched on. Presented by Dr. Kenneth Thomas, Professor of Biology at Northern Essex Community College.

Earth Day: “Going, going Gone! Andover Goes Green” Friday, April 22 at 9 a.m. Free. This energy conservation presentation will highlight the measures taken by Andover’s Plant & Facilities Department resulting in annual energy savings of over $750,000. Speaker: Joe Piantedosi, Acting Director of Plant & Facilities. Also meet our outdoor groups including “Men & Women’s Outdoor Adventures”, Nature walks with the Retelles, “Stride Rite” walking group, Community garden liaison, and Nature photographer Jack Holmes.

"Civil War Life and Medicine” April 27 noon. Cost $2; will include your dessert and beverage.  This film, made during Civil War re-enactments in Lexington and Concord, covers life in a civil war camp and medical treatment for troops. Infused with civil war-period music, it explores women’s roles in battles against the British. Dan Trembley, filmmaker.  Please bring a brown bag lunch.  Registration is required. 

Get Organized in Four Weeks:  Thursdays April 28 – May 19 at 1:30p.m. $20.  Professional organizer, Susan Walko. Learn practical steps to really get organized by tackling a few “hot spots”, letting go of some clutter, a 3 hour room transformation, and the art of putting it away.

Healthy Living Expo: Andover/North Andover YMCA, Sunday, May 1 from 2—4p.m. ASC will join our area YMCA at this fair which will showcase a variety of local providers of health and wellness services.  Chair massage and make-overs will be offered. Our own Sunrise Singers, Rhym-Aires and Sunset Tappers will perform. Free.

Outdoor Activities:  Many outdoor groups are now underway at the Center.  We sponsor Men and Women’s Outdoor Adventure Hikes, Nature walks, group walks around the Doherty track, golfing groups and are open to beginning a Nordic Walking group.  You can speak to representatives of all these groups on our April 22 Earth Day Celebration or call for information.
