My Brothers Pizza Place Closes Down

The pizza shop many have come to love closed its doors recently.

My Brothers Pizza Place closed down recently after being in business for many years in town at 12 Post Office Avenue.

"This one surprised me," said Andover health department director Tom Carbone.

Carbone said the town does not typically get notified when a business leaves town and said he first noticed that the sub shop was closed about two weeks ago. However, he said that the shop seemed to be doing well and could only comment on the seasonal economy.

"It is slower during the summertime," said Carbone.

Carbone said that the shop did have some hygiene issues with the health department but cleared them up over a year ago.

An email to My Brothers Pizza Place was not returned in time for deadline but Andover Patch readers have commented on high rents driving out businesses in Andover and claims this case may be similar.

Let's be honest - they never had great pizza or subs and their location was sub-optimal, especially when compared to Kings. With Sal's opening soon too, I wonder if Kings will survive long thereafter. Rents may play a part in this, but let's not overstate the matter either.

And you likely took your business to King's or Bertucci's, right? See, everyone is free to do business wherever they like and that's fine. The point of the story, is that these Mom & Pop shops, which make try to infuse some uniqueness and individuality to this town, are either being overrun by chain stores and/or high rents.

Of course, Brendan could have elaborated on his story by digging into the reason why Brother's shut down, how long Brother's around, interview the owner, etc., etc. Then all of us readers could all have gotten a better sense of this shop and what I see is a negative trend in this town.

Brenda, could you please elaborate on your story? Find out why Brother's shut down so unexpectedly?

I for one frequented Brother's and liked their pizza. I like that the owner always asked how I was doing, how my little kid was, etc., etc. He knew my family and was genuine in his treatment of me as his customer. He was a hard-working person. For instance, did you know that he rarely took a vacation or day off? I believe Andover Patch readers would like to thank him and wish he lands on his feet soon. Thank you!

I admit to only going there a few times over the years. Always terrible, so I don't think I need any more data. Surprised it lasted this long.

Depot is the best in my opinion.

Liked the pizza and subs and really liked the owner. Sorry to see him go.

The high rent situation is a real problem and a slowdown even seasonally can force doors to close.

Its an oligopoly situation in downtown with a few owners buying property at peak with a high carrying cost on a building who pass on this costs in higher rents.

i for one will miss them, the pizza was better than kings and i thought the sub's were good and the clubs were great and i agree that he was a really nice guy, always asking how you were etc even if just on the street and his kid's were really polite and friendly too.i have been eating there since the late 70's when i was a kid and now live right around the corner and saw him almost daily and he knew who i was...they will be missed

I'm sad for this loss. I remember the free sandwich name board there back when I was a teen. And every chance I got I met some AHS friend there for a sub. 35 years and only ever got the same thing: steak and cheese with onions, mushroom and peppers. Best sandwich going. Bummed.

It's sad they closed. I first ate there when attending PA back in '75. I kept going back whenever I was in the area. Great steak and cheese on syrian bread , as well as the cold veggie on pita. The owner as stated above was a very nice guy. Apart from the high rent, the improved Commons at PA probably affected the client based. Back in the day the food at PA was horrible. It's actually good now...
