Romney or Obama: Who Won the Final Presidential Debate?

President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney squared off in the third and last presidential debate on Monday, Oct. 22. Here's how Massachusetts Republicans and Democrats reacted.

Massachusetts Republicans and Democrats both expressed confidence in their candidates after the final presidential debate, with Republicans citing Gov. Mitt Romney projecting an image of a "capable Commander-in-Chief" and Democrats citing President Barack Obama's line about the military having "fewer horses and bayonets" as standout moments: that's the major finding of the Red and Blue Commonwealth flash polls sent out to local politicos immediately after the debate ended on Monday night.

Obama and Romney faced off on Oct. 22 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florda, with CBS' Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer moderating a debate that focused on foreign policy, but regularly delved back into domestic policy differences between the candidates.

Of the 21 local influential Republicans who took the flash poll, six (28.6 percent) said Romney won by a large margin, 12 (57.1 percent) said he won by a slim margin, two called the debate neutral and one voted that Obama won by a wide margin.

On the other side, 22 local influential Democrats took the flash poll and 17 (77.3 percent) said Obama won by a wide margin, two said he won by a slim margin and three called the debate neutral.

Democrats surveyed also overwhelmingly said that Obama would be the consensus "winner" as declared by the national media: nine (40.9 percent) said by a wide margin and 12 (54.6 percent) said by a slim margin, while one said Romney by a slim margin.

Republicans surveyed were somewhat evenly divided on who they thought would be the consensus "winner" as declared by the national media: six (28.6 percent) said Romney by a slim margin, another six said it'd be neutral, 5 (23.8 percent) said Obama by a slim margin and four (19.1 percent) said Obama by a wide margin.

'Failed Policies' Versus a Military Equipment Zinger

Asked what moment would stand out in the minds of conservatives in Massachusetts, several local Republicans pointed to Romney attacking Obama's policies as president, while also saying the GOP nominee projected a strong and presidential presence.

"Mitt looks like a Commander-in-Chief, Obama is still explaining his failed policies," one Republican poll taker wrote.

Another local Republican cited Romney's response when Obama said that the nation cannot "go back to the same policies" that led to the nation's difficult economic situation and needs to go forward.

"I couldn’t agree more about going forward," Romney replied, "but I certainly don't want to go back to the policies of the last four years ... It's just a tragedy in a nation so prosperous as ours that these last four years have been so hard."

Asked what moment would stand out in the minds of progressives and liberals in Massachusetts, several local Democrats pointed to Obama's retort when Romney said that the Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917.

"We also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed," Obama said. "We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines. And so the question is not a game of Battleship, where we're counting ships. It's what are our capabilities."

Other Democrats cited Obama attacking Romney's previously stated positions, which they characterized as "flip-flops."

What About Swing Voters?

Asked what moment would stand out in the mind of swing voters in Massachusetts, some Democrats again cited the "horses and bayonets" line, while others pointed to Romney "so often agreeing" with Obama on foreign policy issues.

"Romney backing off from every criticism of the President's foreign policy," one Democrat respondent wrote. "And his closing, talking repeatedly about peace as if reciting something memorized. And not answering the President's comments about his campaign. He came out as if trying to get by and not make any waves."

One local Republican also said that "horses and bayonets line was memorable;" however, one local Democrat said that Bay State swing voters would remember "how calm and clear Romney was in his statements."

Other local Republicans cited Romney touting his ability to work with Democrats from his time as governor of Massachusetts, while others pointed to him repeatedly bringing the topic back to the question of the economy.

"Twenty-three million Americans out of work and food stamps at an all-time high—Obama has had four years to improve it and failed," one Republican respondent wrote.

Will the Debate Make a Difference?

Both sides believed that their candidate's performance would increase the number of votes their candidate would win in Massachusetts.

Eight local Republicans (38.1 percent) said they strongly agreed Romney's performance would increase his tally of Bay State votes, another eight somewhat agreed, four (19.1 percent) were neutral and one strongly disagreed.

Eleven local Democrats (50 percent) said they strongly agreed Obama's performance would boost his Massachusetts vote totals, eight (36.4 percent) somewhat agreed and three were neutral.

In final remarks, both sides returned to previous themes, with several Republicans citing Romney's "statesman" demeanor, which they contrasted with Obama's "defensive" and "disruptive, undisciplined" demeanor.

Several Democrats again cited Romney's "etch-a-sketch treatment of al previous statement," as one respondent put it, and that Romney "parroted" Obama "on most of his policies."

That said, one person on each side of the aisle said that both candidates performed well, while another looked forward to Nov. 7, the day after the election.

"Glad it's over," the respondent wrote. "Now let's get through the next two weeks!"

Red and Blue Commonwealth Surveys

Our surveys are not a scientific, random sample of any larger population, but rather an effort to listen to a group of influential local Republican activists, party leaders, candidates and elected officials in Massachusetts. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in Massachusetts' Patch's surveys, although not all responded to this story's questions.

Patch will be conducting Red Commonwealth and Blue Commonwealth surveys throughout the 2012 election season in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in Massachusetts. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in periodic surveys that last just a few minutes, please contact Associate Regional Editor Daniel DeMaina at danield@patch.com.

I see no difference between the two on foreign policy!
I think it was essentially a tie, although Obama came across as angry and small at times.
Romney looked more "Presidential" to me!
At the end of the day, " it's about the economy stupid"!
Just a foot note: In all 3 debates, Obama kept saying that the military is not asking for more funding. Does the president not know that he is the commander in chief of the military? Does he not know that he sets the military's policy?
This would be like me saying that my employees are not asking for more money or better benefits, so I will not do what is in their interest and infact I will cut their pay deeply because their not complaining!
The only difference is that there are over 300 million people's lives that are in jeapordy!

The difference is that when when Romney went on his 3 nation foreign policy tour he embarrassed the US in every country he visited. Romney is not ready for prime time, but if you liked the George Bush era of getting into needless wars without an exit stradegy you'll love Flipper Romney

We can see the wonderfull experience Obama has. The economy is doing just fine!
Pay no attention to the 6,000,000,000.000.000 that he spent on what? ( in just 3 years )
Pay no attention to Obama care that will put us into bankruptcy!
Pay no attention to the huge tax hikes that come with Obama care that will further crush this economy!
Pay no attention to four dollar gas prices! ( the highest in this countries history and double what it was when Bush left office )
Pay no attention that Obama has put a stop to oil and gas exploration that would cut the price in half!
Pay no attention to the rapidly rising food prices because we have no energy policy!
Pay no attention to the four dead Americans in Libya that he continues to cover up!
I could go on and on, but you get the point!
Actually, if you you don't pay attention to any of these things, things don't look so bad! I'll try not to!
Let me do some liberal cheer leading: Bush lied, and Americans died!
Bush was an idiot, he didn't agree with me!
Bush went to war in Iraq for oil! Haven't you people seen the pipe line that he put in from Iraq's oil fields to his home in Texas? He uses this oil to heat his house and drive his cars.
Blah Blah Blah!

Gas is a commodity that is traded on the open market. Prices fluctuate based on buying and selling, and for reasons outside any president's control. Unless you are saying you want more government intervention in another business arena.

Steve said, "Pay no attention to four dollar gas prices! ( the highest in this countries history and double what it was when Bush left office ) "

At year end 2007, gas price is about 68 cents higher than a year earlier. At $3.35 a gallon, San Francisco had the highest average price for self-serve regular unleaded; the lowest price was $2.71 a gallon in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Excerpted from the article, "Gas Prices in 2008 in the USA"
January 2, 2008—crude oil prices at a record $100 per barrel, with regular unleaded fuel costing an average of $3.05 per gallon.
April 21, 2008—Gasoline prices jump to a record $3.50 a gallon in some parts of the U.S.
May 15, 2008— prices shot up to nearly $4 a gallon.
May 21, 2008—Oil price skyrockets to $130 a barrel.
June 9, 2008—Retail gas prices rise above $4 per gallon.
July 7, 2008—Crude oil prices settled-in at a new record of $147 per barrel. The U.S. average price for regular gasoline climbs to an all-time high of $4.11 per gallon. Road trip style vacations are put on hold for many summer travelers.
Dec. 17, 2008—OPEC removes 2.2 million barrels from its daily production. Crude oil collapses to $40 a barrel, becoming the lowest price in almost 4 years.
Dec. 31, 2008—Crude oil prices plummet below $37 a barrel while the U.S. average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline falls to an amazing 5-year low of $1.61.

Do you really believe the president controls OPEC, and the price of gas, a commodity?

Who won??? Probably a draw, not great news for any sitting president for whom foreign policy should be anything but a fair fight.

Romney started out appearing a little over prepared seaching for the right thought or point, lucky for him Obama either intentionally or in frustration became snarky and dismissive which never plays well with independants who want a president that respects alternative opinons and view points.

Whose lies (inaccurate statements) were the bigest and most intentional, Obama won that one hands down! Yeah O-team.

Please go to factcheck.org for yourselves, don't believe me

Romneys fasle claims are all minor (more like mis-steps than lies) all things like:
-Size of the Navy (technically its just barely bigger than after the Clinton years)
-16 T of public debt while only 11 T is technically owed to other people, but where does it get the money to pay itself back??? Yep, Other people

BTW: Bommers/Seniors that 5T$ number the government owes itself is mostly what Clinton took from the Social Security to "Balance" his budgets - Yes, CLINTON TOOK YOUR MONEY, not the devil himself GWB

OBAMA OUTRIGHT INTENTIONALLY LIED to scare everyone affliated with the auto industry in what are now must wins for hiim Ohio & Wisconson with his "you opposed federal help to the auto industry" 'Malarkey'

READ THE OP-ED YOURSELF and look for the words Federal Loan Guarentee

I'm in MA I'm lost, let me go, but if your in NH please please save yourself

Wow, maybe Romney did much better than I first thought

Hammer, Diane, Mary, MHH, HDS...??? Did Everybody park on the tobin last night??

BTW: Gene - can you please refresh my memory just how did Romney embarass us???

I remember him specically working hard to avoid any comment of the presidents foriegn policy while abroad, and generally tempering domestic policy comments.

Perhaps you were embarrassed that he choose to have some private meetings with world leaders and personal friends as oppossed to say ... I don't know ,... maybe attending a major rock concert and then pretend the crowd was there to see him???

Now that would be embarrising.

Let's see he went to London and insulted the British and their Olympic planning, he went to Poland and his staff desicrated the cemetary of Polish war dead, and then they went to Israel and insulted people in the Middle East.
If you think Romney's claims are all minor you really haven't been paying attention.

Does anyone wonder why suddenly gas prices are predicted to fall 50 cents by November or why Wall St is ( as Obama says) all over the map? Aren't these matters part of foriegn affairs?

Lower gas demand due to the end of the summer driving season and the completion of refinery maintenance/repairs. Maybe lower oil prices due to the economy.

And all of this is reflected in wholesale price of gasoline which takes a little while to affect the consumer price of gasoline.

@ mikea
Cheaper gas pricies are from more additives. Look at how many miles to the gallon you get?

By the way, the US military said today they have 600000 bayonettts vs 200000 in 1916' so Pres. Snippy was wrong.

Obama clearly accomplished his goal auditioning for a host job on MSNBC for next year. He can replace Sharpton
