SOUND OFF: ‘You’re Not Special’ Speech Goes Viral

From local bloggers to international news outlets, teacher David McCullough's speech has gone viral.

Wellesley High School’s graduation was anything but out of the ordinary, that is until one teacher told students they were not special.

On Tuesday, The Swellesley Report posted the speech by WHS English teacher David McCullough in which he tells students that despite years of coddling, they’re in fact “not special.”

The post on Swellesley Report has been picked up by several major media outlets including Boston.com, Huffington Post, Yahoo! and other sites, according to Swellesley. The Swellesey Report even created a new post dedicated to the viral-ness of his original post.

So what do you think? Did McCullough's speech cross the line or was it spot on? How would the address go over in Andover? Tell us what you think.

This is someone who is in touch with reality, tells it like it is and helps everyone return to basic ideas that many grew up with. Entitlement is something that I believe has become the expectation of many of todays youth and is setting them up for difficult lessons in the future.

This guy is "spot on", and it begs the question; Were the students listening?

Yes, yes, yes! Finally a teacher who tells it like it is. So many young people today need someone (should be their parents) tell them these things to get them on the right track and not expect to be handed everything. Excellent speech.

Sounds like so far, readers like the speech. How do you think Andover students/parents would have reacted if it happened at AHS graduation? Would we be as receptive to it?
