University of Notre Dame head football coach and St. John’s Prep graduate Brian Kelly will speak at Danversport Yacht Club on Thursday, May 10. Sponsored by the St. John’s Prep Alumni Association, the program is open to the public. Admission is available at two levels: $100/person includes a special reception at 5 pm followed at 6 pm by dinner and the speaking program; $50/person includes the 6 pm dinner and speaking program.
Tickets for the special reception option are limited. Reservations should be made in advance at www.stjohnsprep.org/briankelly or by calling 978-774-6727 x417. Danversport Yacht Club is located at 161 Elliott Street in Danvers, Mass.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Steven Bekel Fund at St. John's Prep. This fund was established in memory of Steven Bekel of Danvers, a member of the Class of 2012 who died in a May 2009 car accident that also took the life of his father, William Bekel. Established by Steven's classmates, the fund provides tuition assistance for Danvers residents attending St. John's.
Kelly was named head coach for the Fighting Irish in December 2009, after three seasons at the University of Cincinnati (2007-2009), where he led the Bearcats to a 2-1 record in postseason bowl games and was named Big East Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2009, as well as Home Depot National Coach of the Year in 2009. Previously, he served three seasons as head coach at Central Michigan University (2004-2006), winning a Mid-American Conference title in 2006. Before going to Central Michigan, he was head coach for 13 seasons (1991-2003) at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, leading the team to back-to-back Division 2 championships in 2002 and 2003. Kelly graduated from Assumption College in 1983, and began his coaching career there after playing linebacker and serving as a two-time captain. Kelly graduated from St. John’s in 1979, and played under coach Fred Glatz during his years at the Prep.
