Vispoli Urges Finegold to Support EBT Reform

It's time for EBT Reform!

Andover, MA—Today Alex Vispoli, Republican candidate for the State Senate in the Second Essex and Middlesex district, urged incumbent Senator Barry Finegold to support Senator Bob Hedlund’s EBT reform amendment.

“It is time that EBT cards stopped being used like ATM cards,” said Vispoli.  “I urge Senator Finegold to support the Hedlund EBT amendment and stand with the taxpayers of his district.”

Today the Senate begins debate on the budget.  Senator Bob Hedlund has filed an amendment that will end cash advances along with further restricting which stores can accept EBT cards and prohibiting the use of the cards out of state.  The Senate budget contains some reforms, but overall they are greatly watered down from the House’s version of the budget.  The Senate wants to create a State Police fraud unit to investigate abuse.

We don’t need to create a police fraud unit.  We need reforms.  We can save taxpayer dollars by passing reforms instead creating more government bureaucracy,” said Vispoli.  “We cannot place police in the stores to assure our tax dollars are being appropriately used.  The fraud can be stopped electronically.”

EBT cards are electronic transfer benefit cards.  They are given out by the state to people who need help paying for food and other necessities.  However, due to lax regulations the cards are being abused and thus taxpayer dollars are being wasted.

Vispoli was first elected to the Andover Board of Selectmen in 2004.  On the board, he has led initiatives including: consolidation of Andover’s IT organization and infrastructure, creation of the Andover Economic Development Council, I93 proposed interchange project, reduction in Town owned vehicles, and annual citizens mid – year review for major project updates, regionalization opportunities with surrounding towns – including North Andover shared DPW resource.

Vispoli was also elected the Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA) Board of Directors and the Massachusetts Selectmen’s Association (MSA) Board of Directors in 2011.  He is currently the District 2 Representative (Essex and Middlesex Counties) for the MSA.   He is a member of the Governor’s Local Government Advisory Commission.

Professionally, Vispoli has been in the information technology business for 25 years.  He currently holds the position of Vice President of Sales for a Boston-based technology company.    Most importantly, Vispoli is a devoted husband and father of 4 children.
