Merrimack's Mark Dennehy Inducted into BC High's Hall of Fame

Mark Dennehy of Andover has been inducted into Boston College High School's Hall of Fame. The school honored Mark and four other athletes at a dinner at the Hunter-Fahey Commons on November 26, 2013.

Mark '86 was chosen for his outstanding hockey career, Matt Greene '04 for hockey, Charles Barnes '95 for swimming, RJ Ryan '95 for football and basketball, Tim Bulman '01 for football and the 2001 Baseball team.

Mark helped Boston College win three Hockey East regular season titles and was a part of three NCAA qualifying teams, including the 1990 team that advanced to the Frozen Four at The Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. He played for the U.S. National Team in the World Cup of Hockey, Olympics, and World Championships. While coaching at UMass, he recruited goaltender Jon Quick who was a member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Silver Medal team and, most recently, led the Los Angeles Kings to their first-ever Stanley Cup Championship.

“Most first-class defensemen are lauded for their vision,” said Ron Fletcher '87 goalie, “that is, their ability to survey the ice, anticipate a play’s development, and alter its course with a few decisive moves. Mark had that sort of vision manning the blue-line at B.C. High; and through years of devotion to and study of the game he loves, he turned that vision into a perspective on coaching that has placed Merrimack on the national stage. More important, though, Mark has cultivated in his players the qualities he models on and off the ice: hard work, intelligence, commitment, camaraderie, and a marrow-deep understanding of teamwork. On top of that he has the good sense to motivate his team with an appreciation for Joshua Tree-era classics from U2.”

“Danny Shea and Paul Marshall helped to pull BC High hockey into the realm of respectability,” said Jack Dunn, Former BC High Hockey coach, Alumni Director and Teacher, “but Mark Dennehy, Mike Sullivan and Chris Marshall convinced us for the first time that we could win. Their efforts ushered in an era that saw the Eagles become one of the most dominant hockey programs in New England.  Mark was the consummate student and gentleman off the ice, who brought unparalleled grace, excellence and consistency to his game on the ice.  That he would excel as a player at Boston College and later in the college coaching ranks where he has earned a reputation as one of the nation's top coaches, comes as a surprise to no one who knows him.”
