PROFILE: Andover Hockey Shop

The popular spot for hockey gear in Andover also carries equipment and apparel for all sports.

Andover Hockey Shop, 342 North Main Street, is a well-known establishment in Shawsheen Village but what some might not know is that they sell more than hockey gear, according to owner Chris Gravell.

His grandfather started the business in 1968 as a hockey shop, at the time Bobby Orr and the Bruins were “huge.” It has since evolved to include all team sports, and 15 types of Andover apparel and accessories, he explained.

While hockey remains the most popular category, the shop outfits teams and individuals from Andover and surrounding communities, according to Gravell.

He explained they carry gear and apparel for lacrosse, football, soccer, field hockey, baseball, basketball, softball and in-line skating. The shop also personalizes clothing with embroidery and screen printing services.

Gravell and Store Manager Kevin Drew describe themselves as service-oriented. “Our mission is to provide the best fit," said Gravell, who has been working there since he was 14 years old.

The shop has been located in the historic post office building in Shawsheen Village for the past 10 years. Previously, it was across Poor Street. Gravell said that he and his father needed more space, but did not want to move far from the Shawsheen Village location.

The Andover-specific apparel not only includes tee shirts, sweatshirts and jackets, but also 8 different types of hats. Although most clothing is unisex in size, he pointed out that they do carry girls sizes for tee shirts and pj pants.

Rink kits have recently grown in popularity, and Gravell said he has sold 50 of them in Andover. The kits come in two sizes, 20x40 and full size. “We can also help with the installation,” he explained.

Both Drew and Gravell play adult hockey, and Andover Hockey shop sponsors a couple of men’s league teams.

The store has sales and promotions, “now and again,” explained Gravell.  “I will probably put something together for the holidays." He also has gifts starting at $10 and up.
