ALERT: Tornado Warning

The warning affects all of Essex County.

The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a tornado warning for Andover and the rest of Essex County.

NWS has already issued severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood alerts for the area, and now there is a tornado warning in effect until 2:30 p.m.

Don't be a hero. Residents are advised to stay indoors, seek shelter and go to the lowest level of their homes.

NWS advises:

"TAKE COVER NOW. MOVE TO A BASEMENT OR AN INTERIOR ROOM ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF A STURDY BUILDING. AVOID WINDOWS. IF IN A MOBILE HOME OR OUTDOORS...MOVE TO THE CLOSEST SUBSTANTIAL SHELTER AND PROTECT YOURSELF FROM FLYING DEBRIS."

I live two towns over, in Dracut, and got EVERY NWS alert issued that day for Middlesex and Essex counties. Let me clear this up... There was some confusion on this page as to what parts of Essex county was included in the tornado warning. At one point, all of Essex was under a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM warning, but only SOUTH CENTRAL Essex (areas just north of Boston)... QUOTE: NWS TAUNTON: "THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS ISSUED A * TORNADO WARNING FOR... EXTREME NORTHEASTERN SUFFOLK COUNTY IN EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS... EXTREME SOUTH CENTRAL ESSEX COUNTY IN EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS... * UNTIL 230 PM EDT" Although all of Essex may have received the tornado warning alert on cellular phones, NOAA Weather Radio, etc., it was ONLY for that south central area. There never was a tornado warning for areas outside of extreme south central Essex, despite the technical coding of the alert stating otherwise (although not obvious to most). Once, I got an iPad alert that Dracut (where I live) was under a warning, yet it was in extreme southeastern Middlesex county. This can happen; as even more narrowed coding has only been implemented in the South. Next time, READ THE COUNTY LIST CAREFULLY. Just because it says "ESSEX" somewhere doesn't mean the whole county is in the warning.
