The Robert Lehman Art Center Presents: A Retrospective: Looking From Past to Present, featuring the work of photographer Tony Decaneas

NORTH ANDOVER – The Robert Lehman Art Center at Brooks

School is pleased to announce its latest exhibit, A Retrospective: Looking from Past to Present featuring the works
of photographer Tony Decaneas. The show, which opens Thursday, Feb. 13, runs
through March 10 and features both recent projects and photographs from
Decaneas’ publications.

Decaneas started Panopticon
Gallery in 1970. The company, now called Decaneas Archive, began as a high quality, black-and-white custom lab. It reflected Decaneas’ own photographic interests: humanistic documentary photography as well as lyrical and narrative landscapes. Decaneas is the author of Bradford Washburn: Mountain Photography, and he has published collections of photographs by Ernest C. Withers. He has also published the book Pavlia, Portrait of a Greek Village, a collection of photographs of his father’s village.

“His exhibition shows the evolution of a photographer,”
said English teacher and longtime friend of Decaneas, Mark Shovan. “How did he
start out, and now that he’s 60-something, what does he see now?”

In addition to his exhibit, Decaneas
will also serve as the school’s artist-in-residence for the week prior to his show,
working with students in the visual arts classes.
