Andover Veterans Day Details

There will be three ceremonies and a luncheon.

Monday is Veterans Day, a day in which we honor all those who have served to protect our nation.

Veterans Day was once Armistice Day, proclaimed on Nov. 11, 1919, to celebrate the end of World War I on that day a year before.

World War I turned out not to be the "war to end all wars," as the world would learn with World War II. In the 1950s, Congress voted to change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day so the holiday could celebrate all veterans of all wars.

Here's how Andover will celebrate Veterans Day on Monday:
  • At 10 a.m., there will be ceremony at West Parish Cemetery.
  • Another ceremony will follow at 11 a.m. at Spring Grove Cemetery. A third ceremony is planned for 12 p.m. at Ballardvale Green.
  • The ceremonies will be followed by a lunch at 1 p.m. at the Masonic Temple located, 7 High St.
  • Weather is expected to be in the low 50s degrees, so make sure to wear a jacket. Skies are expected to be mostly sunny, but this is New England, so that could change.
  • If the weather becomes nasty, there will instead be a brief ceremony at 12 p.m. at Elm Green followed by an indoors ceremony at the Masonic Temple.
