Funeral Services for Dick Kelley Announced

Andover native was sports information director at Boston College.

Andover native Dick Kelley, who passed away Thursday due to complications from ALS, will be honored with a funeral Mass Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church, 28 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill. 

Visiting hours will be held Monday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lehman, Reen, McNamara Funeral Home, 63 Chestnut Hill Ave., Brighton. 

Obituary:

Richard Kelley died February 13, 2014 at Massachusetts General Hospital as a result of complications from ALS.  Richard or D.K. as he was commonly referred to at Boston College.  Loving son of Ann (Daley) and Edward Kelley of Andover.  Devoted brother of Edward "Ted" and his wife Carrie of Foxboro and Patrick Michael Kelley of Andover.  Cherished uncle of Michael "Micky" and Emma Kelley of Andover, Ryan and Meghan Kelley of Foxboro.  Also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousin and his Boston College family. 

Richard attended the Andover Public school system and was a very involved in both academic and athletic activities graduating from Andover High in 1983.  He received his bachelor degree in political science in 1987 and remained at Boston College serving as the sports information graduate assistant for two years, while earning his master’s degree.  In July 1989, Kelley entered the sports information field on a full time basis accepting a position as assistant sports information director at Boston University.  The following year in Sept. 1991 Richard returned to his alma mater as the assistant sports information and in December of that year was promoted to assistant athletic director for media relations.  He also taught news writing courses in the Communications Department.  Kelley’s duties at Boston College included serving as the primary contact for men’s basketball, serving as the secondary contact for ice hockey and men’s soccer; writing and editing numerous media guides, supervising interns and work-study students, serving as office liaison with the Varsity Club Hall of Fame and assisting in all aspect of office operations.  During his tenure at Boston College, Kelley has been involved with numerous NCAA championships.  He served as the media liaison for the men’s basketball team during their trips to the NCAA Tournament.  In addition, Richard served as assistant media coordinator for the 1999 East Region First and Second Rounds that Boston College hosted at TD Garden. 

Richard was a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America and the US Basketball Writers Association.  He received the 2012 Boston College Varsity Club Medal of Excellence and Sportsmanship and 2013 US Basketball Writers Association Most Courageous Award.

Funeral from the Lehman Reen & McNamara Funeral Home Tuesday Feb. 18th at 9 am.  Funeral Mass in St. Ignatius Church 28 Commonwealth Ave. Chestnut Hill at 10.  Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.  Visiting Hours Monday Feb. 17th from 4-8 pm in the funeral home.  Interment West Parish Garden Cemetery Andover.
