John Tierney (D), Richard Tisei (R), Daniel Fishman (L): MA 6th Congressional District
John Tierney has been the congressman representing Andover for the past 16 years. He faces off against Richard Tisei, a former State Senate minority leader who ran as gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker's running mate in 2010, and Beverly business owner Daniel Fishman. In 2010, Tierney defeated Boxford attorney Bill Hudak 57-43.
Niki Tsongas (D), Jon Golnik (R): Third Congressional District
Niki Tsongas has been representing Andover since 2007, when she won a special election replace Marty Meehan, who resigned to Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
She faces off against Jon Golnik, a Republican from Carlisle.
In 2010, Tsongas defeated Golnik by a margin of 54 to 42 percent.
State Sen. Barry Finegold (D) State Rep. Paul Adams (R): Mass. House 18th Essex District
Finegold edged Jamison Tomasek in 2010 to earn his first term in the State Senate after having served as a state representative. Two years later, Paul Adams is hoping to follow the same path by defeating Finegold. Adams won his first term from the 17th Middlesex District in 2010, defeating Patricia Commane. However, redistricting literally moved Adams out of the 17th and rather than relocate to seek re-election, he opted to make a run at Finegold. Both men are Andover residents.
Barbara L'Italien (D), Jim Lyons (R): MA House 18th Essex District
Lyons has been the state representative representing Andover for the past two years. He faces off against L'Italien, a former state representative whom Lyons defeated in 2010.
Frank Moran (D), Kevin M. Cuff (U): MA House 17th Essex District
Lawrence City Council President Frank Moran and Andover Banking and Lending Executive Kevin M. Cuff, who is unenrolled in a political party, are both vying for the seat that State Rep. Paul Adams is giving up in order to run for state senate.
Andover Updates From The Polls
10:20 a.m. Andover High School Field House
Traffic was backed up in both directions on Shawsheen Road as far as the eye could see and cars were slowly making their way to the field house.
Andover Town Clerk Larry Murphy said that voters were waiting outside the field house as early at 6:20 a.m.
By the time voting began at 7 a.m. he said between 300 and 400 people were already there waiting.
"We've been very busy...very busy," Murphy said.
He said that voter turnout is strong and expects it to meet 2008, which was roughly 88 percent, or more.
"I think we will meet it or exceed it," said Murphy.
As of 9 a.m., active voter turnout was 16.4 percent, more than the total state primary voter turnout.
11 a.m. Andover Senior Center
Voter activity at the Andover Senior Center is not nearly as high as at the field house but election workers say that there was a line forming as early as 6:30 a.m.
However, the line was expedited quickly and voters were coming and going without wait after 7:30 a.m.
Election workers reported a 10 to 11 percent absentee ballot turnout before voting even began.
5 p.m.
Lines of cars outside the high school were not nearly as long as the late morning but were starting to grow. Andover Town Clerk Larry Murphy said that voter turnout as of 4 p.m. was 64 percent, or 13,470 ballots cast.
If voting continues at this rate, Murphy said that Andover is likely to see over a 90 percent turnout.
And he said that voters have been moving through the polls steadily all day.
"It's been great," said Murphy, adding that lines haven't been longer than 3 to 6 people.
