Tsongas Votes for Budget Compromise

Congresswoman Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell) voted to support an agreement on funding government operations of the remainder of the year earlier this week despite the fact that she saw it as imperfect., saying it will prevent any near term government shutdowns and was passed by the house earlier this week.

While she was frustrated with low funding for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) compared to previous years, she praised the compromise that began to remove the impacts of sequestration and also provided additional help to early childhood education initiatives.

“Partially rolling back the across-the-board cuts signals recognition that deficit reduction cannot be solely achieved by blindly slashing spending.  We must make targeted, thoughtful cuts that more broadly apply the responsibility for reducing our deficit,” she said. “Our country still faces long-term fiscal challenges and much more needs to be done to continue to grow jobs and support middle class families. But this compromise, passed with Democratic and Republican support, will keep the doors open and enable us to continue building towards a stronger economy.”
