Finegold to Announce Treasurer Candidacy Wednesday

The state senator from Andover hopes to fill the seat of gubernatorial candidate Steve Grossman.

State Sen. Barry Finegold of Andover is set to make his state treasurer bid official Wednesday at the Georgetown Housing Complex Community Center in Hyde Park.

Finegold expressed interest in the seat last May, after State Treasurer Steve Grossman announced he would run for governor.

Finegold, 42, was elected to the Senate representing the 2nd Essex and Middlesex District -- which includes Andover, Tewksbury, Dracut and Lawrence -- in 2010 and won reelection in 2012. He previously served as a state representative for the Essex 17th District for 11 years and as a selectman in Andover.

Finegold made an unsuccessful bid for Congress in a 2007 special election to fill Congressman Marty Meehan's seat, losing to current Congresswoman Niki Tsongas.

Andover Selectman Alex Vispoli, who is running for Finegold's Senate seat, took a moment to congratulate Finegold.

“I want to thank Barry for his years of service to the people of Andover, Dracut, Lawrence, and Tewksbury," Vispoli said. "I wish him the best of luck in the Democrat primary. His decision to seek higher  office gives the people of this district an opportunity for a new direction. I believe now is the time to elect a Senator who can use his business experience to demand accountability of our tax dollars and work to put people back to work,” said Vispoli, Chairman of the Andover Board of Selectmen.
