L'Italien Mailers Call Out Lyons on 'Non-Family' Agenda

Candidate in the 18th Essex district Barbara L'Italien sent out mailers to citizens in the district that said incumbent State Rep. Jim Lyons (R-Andover) has an agenda that does not represent the priorities of Merrimack Valley communities.

With the election days away, Barbara L'Italien, challenger for the 18th Essex state rep. seat, sent out some mailers recently that claim that State Rep. Jim Lyons is backed by groups that are anti-equal marriage and anti-choice.

The mailer contains several bullet points explaining the different efforts he had made while a state rep. that do not represent the will of the district.

L'Italien claims Lyons wrote a bill would restrict health insurance coverage to cover counseling for rape victims, supported the restriction of counseling for gay students, supported the elimination of funding for teen pregnancy prevention and supported the elimination of student health services.

The mailer reads:

"When Jim Lyons ran for office two years ago, he claimed he was running to bring balance to Beacon Hill. What he didn't say was that he was motivated and funded by special interest groups dedicated to ending a woman's right to choose, limiting access to contraception, and eliminating laws and programs that keep our families safe."

Lyons did not return a request for comment on the mailer as of deadline.

The 18th Essex District consists of sections of Andover, North Andover, Georgetown, Boxford, Methuen and Haverhill.

Specifically, the 18th Essex includes precincts 1, 7 and 8, of the town of Andover, precinct 2, of the town of Boxford, precinct 2, of the town of Georgetown, precincts 1 and 2 of ward 2, precinct 2 of ward 5, and precinct 2 of ward 7, of the city of Haverhill, precinct 7, of the town of Methuen, and precincts 7 and 8, of the town of North Andover, all in the county of Essex.

UPDATE: Lyons responded about the mailer, calling it a distraction.

"As you may know, I have been campaigning on the economic and fiscal issues," Lyons said. "That is what I have been focusing on and working hard at for the voters, since first being elected two years ago. In my door-to-door campaign, I have the opportunity to listen to what the voters have to say. We talk about increasing Local Aid, rolling back the 25% Sales Tax hike that hurts the Merrimack Valley, and reforming state government so it becomes truly responsive, open, and transparent."

"If my opponent is basing her campaign on an entirely different set of issues, that's her responsibility," Lyons continued. "My opponent can speak for herself."

The fish rots from the head and L'Italien has adopted the scorched-earth, all LIES, all the time policy of the man at the very top of the the Democrat Party hierarchy (yes, I am referring to the most corrupt President in US history, Barack Hussein Obama). Since Liberal Democrats cannot possibly win an election by telling the truth or, God forbid, running on their records, they resort to misrepresenting or, in this case, telling out-and-out lies about their opponent's record. Representative Lyons has consistently stood up for the taxpayers of his district for the past two years while L'Italien has enjoyed a $100,000 State job "handed" to her as a consolation prize when she lost two years ago. Representative Lyons was single-handedly able to expose the Patrick administration's well-hidden secret of spending over $250 MILLION dollars on ILLEGAL aliens. While serving as State Rep, L'Italien knew full well the Patrick administration was taking money from our schools and our children in the form of local aid and HANDING it to people who entered this country ILLEGALLY but did not lift a finger to try and prevent it. If you want someone on Beacon Hill who will manage your hard-earned tax dollars responsibly, the choice is clear, Jim Lyons.

This is a one-sided news story. By appearances, Brendan Lewis is employed by the Patch - but I don't think that's the case. It makes the Patch look bad - like its in the bag for the Democrats. Where's the coverage to the mail the Lyons campaign sends out? Like the one where L'Italien loves tax increases? They should label submissions they decide to accept by outside individuals more clearly - as letters to the editor or private submissions or ...

Every word of the flyer is true. Jim Lyons is an anti-choice, anti-family planning candidate. He's out of step. Massachusetts is a great place to live precisely because we've made important investments in infrastructure and education. Barbara L'Italien will continue to see that the state and the 14th Essex district continue to improve.

The $100,000. Democratic patronage patriot, also known as "Working together" Barbara L'Italien has turned out to be a slash and burn Halloween monster. These mailers which deliberately distort Lyon's positions are despicable and beneath contempt. L'Italien has created phoney issues to avoid answering for the tax increases she has inflicted on us. A vote for L'Italien is a vote for a tax increase.
MikeA November 02, 2012 at 02:03 PM
EagleTribune is endorsing Lyons: "State representative, 18th Essex District: We favor Jim Lyons, the Republican incumbent. Lyons, with his no-holds-barred conservatism, has been a thorn in the side of the entrenched Beacon Hill culture. His opponent, Democrat Barbara L’Italien, has been a participant in one of the more obscene examples of political patronage we’ve witnessed. Voted out as the 18th Essex representative two years ago, L’Italien’s political allies parked her in a $100,000-a-year, make-work job at the state treasury until she was ready to run again. Outrageous!"
MikeA November 02, 2012 at 02:22 PM
Here's the ET 2010 endorsement of Lyons: "In the 18th Essex District, which stretches from Andover to Georgetown, we support Republican challenger James Lyons Jr. over incumbent Democrat Barbara L'Italien. Lyons supports rolling back the sales, meals and income taxes to 5 percent. These tax hikes have punished businesses and hurt working families. L'Italien supported the sales tax hike and defends it as better than a gasoline or property tax increase. For L'Italien, it's a choice between one tax increase or another. The idea of no tax increase at all never comes up. Lyons can do better by the taxpayers and deserves a chance." Lyons deserves two more years.

Look, people are financially hurting. If L'Italien had a positive economic story to tell benefiting the taxpayers wouldn't she have told it by now in her literature? She's a tax raiser in depressionesque economic times and a government crony accepting a 100K patronage job in the Treasurer's office plus she's an ornery individual prone to berating and insulting people in disagreement with her in the elitist manner she comports herself. Having instituted the alcohol and meals tax, raising the sales tax, and opposing a state tax decrease L'Italien has nothing economically to say So in this awful economy she helped create if L'Italien thinks she can instead win on her far left social issue stands when many people are struggling trying to figure out how they can pay the mortgage or rent to have a roof over the heads, then she certainly has the right to try. Right now, in these times, Barbara L'Italien is the enemy of working families. We simply can't afford her and her brand of massive government spending politics.

NEWSFLASH TO PATCH -- REDISTRICTING HAS ALREADY TAKEN EFFECT. The 18th Essex dropped Haverhill, Methuen and Georgetown and picked up Precinct 6 in North Andover, expanded to all of Andover that does not abut Lawrence, and southern Tewksbury. (I know you cut and pasted the district description from the Mass Legislature web site but it is out of date.) Since you're working closely with the L'Italien campaign, just give them a call to confirm the actual district. Should be easy to update the story.
Michael Quinlan November 02, 2012 at 03:36 PM
Lyons is running in the 18th Essex but I do concede your point that Barbara is more concerned with residents outside her district.
Local Jokull November 02, 2012 at 03:48 PM
I'm not a Lyons supporter, but I have now read two articles by Brendan Lewis that are essentially L'Italien campaign plugs. Re-hashing a candidate's mailing is not a story. I hope Brian McGonigle gives this a serious look because the Patch will quickly become irrelevant in political coverage if it keeps up. Leave the biased rants to the folks who hide behind false names in the comments section ;) PS: great job to Patch on Sandy coverage--strong evidence that a local rag can be very relevant and informative.
Johnson November 02, 2012 at 04:08 PM
Barbara L'Italien has been awful. We have received one mailer after another filled with ridiculous, hyperbolized and wildly untruthful claims about her opponent. Each one more absurd than the last. 'Jim Lyons wants to ban women'. Alright, Babs, we get it. Do you have any reasons we should vote for you? Didn't think so.
Bill Kelly November 02, 2012 at 04:12 PM
The facts are that Rep Lyons has spent his time on Beacon Hill filing bills to remove the buffer zone around abortion clinics and to remove all mandates from health insurance coverage. These bills have little to no chance of passage and have gathered very few cosponsors from his Republican colleagues. I think the letters to this paper and elsewhere especially from the School Committee are voicing complaints that the Rep has done little to work with local officials on matters that have a direct impact on school and municipal operations. All the posts here do not dispute these facts and only attack his opponent. Mr Lyions may not be running his campaign on these issues but the facts are he has filed these bills and in my opinion there are only so many battles that can be won on Beacon Hill especially when you are in the minority party. Working on reform of how chapter 70 funds are allocated to me anyway would be a better issue to wage battle on. Not these right wing wing social issues.
MikeA November 02, 2012 at 04:34 PM
The fact is that Rep. Lyons isn't a liberal Democrat. If you are a liberal Democrat on the North Andover School Committee, I would imagine you'd rather work with a Liberal Democrat as your representative. Duh. During the eight years Rep. L'Italien was a representative, she had a reputation of being difficult to work with if you disagreed with her. That's why she got booted in the first place. There's a stench at the state house and having someone as diverse as Rep. Lyons there to try to clean the stables is a good thing. A breathe of fresh air as it were.
Bill Callahan November 02, 2012 at 04:49 PM
Mailers typically have two sides. Where is a photo of the other side? The part where L'Italien identifies the different, misguided bills supported by Lyons!
Bill Callahan November 02, 2012 at 04:52 PM
I would just like to say that it appears someone is marking my comments as "inappropriate" when I defend Ms. L'Italien. I would hope that other Patch commenters would have the decency to have a full airing of opinions in the finest tradition of this great Commonwealth and these magnificent United States.
Bill Kelly November 02, 2012 at 06:08 PM
Come on Mike you can do better then that. Why don't you specifically defend the bills he has filed on abortion clinic buffer zones, health insurance mandates and eliminating the grants that pay for school nurses, oh and if this bill were to be passed local schools would be left with 2 choices, less nurses or the cost of these nurses gets picked up by local taxpayers. Not much of a choice to me. Nobody has to date explained how any of these bill if passed would benefit the constituents of the 18th district.
MikeA November 02, 2012 at 06:27 PM
My comments on this news article is about the one-side Patch coverage - not about Rep. Lyons positions. I've explained my opinion already - in the letters to the editor responses I've given. If I didn't know better I could accuse you of having a short memory or a feeble mind since you want me to explain it again. But instead I'll just accuse you of trying to mislead voters on Rep. Lyons true position and reasoning behind those bills he proposes - because you reject my reasoning. If you want higher and higher taxes, I'm not surprised you want the government to be involved in all kinds of things. BTW, you sound like Santa is currently paying for nurses in our schools and Rep. Lyons is being the Grinch. Santa is not paying for these nurses. What's wrong with local taxpayers picking up local expenses?
Brendan Lewis November 02, 2012 at 07:10 PM
Hi Bill, you just need to click on the PDF of the mailer in this article and it will allow you to see the second page (aka the other side of the mailer).
George Lewis November 02, 2012 at 09:39 PM
Hi All Name one thing that Lyons has done that has helped the people ??????
MikeA November 02, 2012 at 09:49 PM
He hasn't raised taxes and he's trying to lower taxes.
George Lewis November 02, 2012 at 09:54 PM
So He's done NOTHING!
MikeA November 02, 2012 at 09:56 PM
That's a whole lot of nothing IMHO.
George Lewis November 02, 2012 at 10:16 PM
So in his two years he accomplished nothing. Being a businessman, I would fire the guy!
Jeff Twohig November 02, 2012 at 10:36 PM
Ah Bill, now it all becomes clear. I replied to your post on another Patch story and now I see you have posted here as well. Are you doing this for the L'Italien campaign free of charge or are they giving you a "small stipend" to trash Rep. Lyons OR are you somehow related to the L'Italien family ? Not to worry, I'm sure Barbara's "friends" on Beacon Hill will "create" another six-figure state job for her after the election.
Jeff Twohig November 02, 2012 at 10:45 PM
HI Brendan, slightly off topic but, am I missing it or do you no longer feature the "How Andover Spent Your Money This Week" feature ? Thanks !
Brendan Lewis November 02, 2012 at 11:29 PM
Hi Jeff, Yes we are still doing that feature but I've just missed a couple week here and there. The site did have it last week but had been missing it a couple times before that. I hope to start it back up on a regular basis after elections.
Rotbart November 03, 2012 at 08:28 PM
Hde got rid of $100,000. payroll patriot Barbara L'Italien, a great public service.
Jeff Twohig November 03, 2012 at 11:39 PM
Thanks Brendan ! Jeff
Mike Burns November 05, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Barabara should go back to her consolation prize , a 100k a year do nothing job, the democrats jury rigged the Essex county districs to try and remove 2 republicans . This state needs more balance , a one party system is rotten to the core.
