Adams Kicks Off Campaign for State Senate

Running on a platform of lowering taxes and an end to overspending, State Representative Paul Adams (R) held his official campaign kickoff Thursday night at .  

Approximately 40 friends, family, and local politicians came to support the 30-year-old candidate’s bid for State Senator of the 2nd Essex and Middlesex district, which includes Andover, Dracut, Lawrence and Tewksbury.

If Adams succeeds in winning the Republican nomination this September 6 against Town Selectman Alex Vispoli, he will face incumbent Barry Finegold in the general November election.

Adams who was elected to the State House of Representatives in 2010, said he wants to “take Massachusetts in a new direction.” Standing for values and principles, he said he doesn’t waver in his actions.  

He explained that he has grown increasingly concerned about the fiscal health of Massachusetts and has helped win important battles in the House including lowering of Personal Income Tax and Corporate Tax.

“The next battle is to lower the sales tax which has had a significant affect on business," he said.  

Adam also wants to prioritize local aid to the towns and pointed to the public safety crisis of a couple of years ago. “It is about doing the right thing,” he explained. 

A Plan to Win

He said his three-fold plan involves reigning in state spending, rolling back taxes and restoring local aid to take care of basic services.

Noting the importance of grassroots, Adams said he intends to campaign by knocking on doors and swaying undecided voters.

State Representative Jim Lyons (R) introduced his colleague and said that they were committed to certain values, of “openness and transparency." He explained that the democratic majority controlled Senate, (only 4 out of 40 are Republicans), “doesn’t want us to know what is going on.”

Lyons praised Adams’ toughness and called him “unafraid to fight the democratic machine.” He emphasized that the district needs someone on the Senate with "fiscal restraints.”

Calling Adams his friend, he said it is a pleasure to serve alongside him in the House of Representatives. 

Adams explained that the redistricting of the House seats in 2011 would have made it more difficult to win as a Republican in the revised 17th Essex District. that now includes only parts of Andover and Lawrence.

Instead of running against Lyons in the 18th district, he decided to run for the Senate seat.

A 2000 graduate of Andover High School, Adams holds a BS from Suffolk College in International Relations and Economics.  He is the third of five children of Steven and Lynette Adams of Andover.

According to his father, Adams has been interested in politics since 11th grade when he became interested in the "Founding Fathers" and decided he was going to pursue this as a career.
