Vispoli Running for State Senate

The Andover Selectmen chair has set his eyes on Beacon Hill.

Republican Andover Board of Selectmen Chair Alex Vispoli has announced that he's running for State Senate again.

“I am running for the State Senate because it’s time to give the people of our district a break from compulsive tax increases and unresponsive government, these decisions have impacts that hurt our district” Vispoli said in his announcement. "It’s time to look to savings and reforms first instead of automatically voting to tax our already overburdened taxpayer."

Vispoli plans to run for the Second Essex and Middlesex District seat --which represents Andover, Tewksbury, Dracut and Lawrence -- currently held by Democrat Barry Finegold, who recently announced that he would run for state treasurer in the 2014 election. Before he won the seat in 2010, it was held by Democrat Susan Tucker.

Vispoli, who serves on the Massachusetts Municipal Association and Local Government Advisory Commission and brings decades of technology industry experience, said his platform will focus on job growth, improving education and government reform.

"Just recently we saw an uninformed and uncaring legislature ignorantly pass a high tech tax only to sheepishly repeal it when they finally realized the harm it would do to job creation and the Massachusetts economy," Vispoli said. "If that wasn’t enough, they passed a gas tax increase and amazingly added a provision to make future tax increases automatic. They didn’t even have the courage to be recorded on any future tax increase."

Vispoli ran for State Senate in 2012 but narrowly lost to State Rep. Paul Adams in the Republican primary by less than 100 votes. Adams went on to challenge Finegold in the general election but lost that bid.
