Voter Turnout Average So Far in Primary

Voters have been showing up to cast their ballots in the State Primary today in Andover, but not in huge numbers. However, Town Clerk Lawrence Murphy said that the primaries don't typically get any where near the turnout that a presidential election gets.

"It's been slow but steady," said Murphy around 3:30 p.m. today.

Murphy expects about a 15 percent voter turnout for the primary, about the same as a town election. There were 22,580 registered voters as of last May, with 15 percent being 3,387 voters.

"That's typical for a state primary," said Murphy.

In 2010, Andover saw roughly a 29 percent voter turnout for the primary and 11 percent voter turnout for the 2008 primary.

"This is sort of middle of the road," said Murphy.

Murphy said that the definitely brought the activity up.

"If it weren't for that (the State Senate race) we'd be much lower," said Murphy.
