Group Forms to Oppose Merrimack College's Building Plan

A group of concerned citizens have united to organize and speak out against Merrimack College's plan to build student housing as part of its master plan. 

This Andover community group, called Coalition for Merrimack College Smart Growth, recently launched a Facebook page. 

In its "about" section, the group writes, "The Andover community is concerned about Merrimack College’s plan to construct student housing during phase 2 of their master plan on Austin Green, adjacent to Rock Ridge Rd and Elm St. We believe the college and Board of Trustees have not done an adequate job of due diligence in determining the impact (5 Buildings, 350 beds) to the surrounding community or explored less disruptive sites that are not detrimental to Andover and North Andover residents."

MCSG is petitioning the town, students, alumni and the college community to reconsider the plan. 

The group joined other neighbors from North Andover to meet with the college in June, after which the group was formed, reported the Eagle Tribune. 

The plan calls for four new dorms in addition to a community center on Austin Field, which is near the entrance on Elm Street in Andover. Three would be built in Andover and the other two in North Andover. Opponents of the plan argue that it will add unnecessary traffic and congestion in the towns, said the Tribune.
