Andover High School students will begin their first day of school tomorrow among the activity of a state primary.
The Andover High School parking lot will see an increase in activity tomorrow when both students arrive for their first day back and voters head over to the field house to vote in the State Primary. Students have been encouraged not to drive to school today, according to an article in the Eagle Tribune. Town Clerk Lawrence Murphy said that there will be extra police detail and that he anticipates that they will be able to handle the situation without any major traffic backups. Officials say that the high traffic times will, obviously, fall at the start and end of the school day. Read the full article on the Eagle Tribune website.

According to a new study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, roughly 17 percent of American high school students engage in smoking, drinking or doing drugs during the school day. The study also indicated that approximately 86 percent of students indicated that they knew of classmates who abused drugs or alcohol during the school day. This was the 17th such study conducted by the NCASA. The group interviewed more than 1,000 students ages 12-17, according to an article appearing on Huffington Post. Perhaps more disturbing aspects to the survey included roughly 50 percent of the students indicating there was a place on their campus where students reguarly went to do drugs or drink alcohol. And about 44 percent said they …

School's almost back in session, but were you aware of these state laws on school buses?
Most kids and parents know the basic "Rules of the Bus", but here are a few Massachusetts' state laws about school buses you might not have known. #1. Everyone knows to stop when a school bus is loading and unloading passengers, but what you may not know is that if you don’t stop, you could get a ticket of up to $250. That fine can go up to $2,000 and a suspended license of up to a year for subsequent offenses (MGL 90-14) #2. Oh, speaking of stopping behind a stopped bus, even fire trucks, police cars and ambulances with their sirens on have to stop until the passengers have been loaded or unloaded. (MGL 89-7B) #3. Tell your kids to sit down, because bus drivers can be fined up to $500 if they drive the bus when the kids aren’t sitting …

This was a letter written to parents of Andover students by Paul P. Szymanski, Assistant School Superintendent for Finance and Administration. I would like to inform you of several changes that were made at the High School/West Middle School campus during our summer break. Several modifications and improvements were made on the grounds of West Middle School to improve drainage, parking, and accessibility. The modifications to the roadway affect West Middle and the High School. The changes should improve circulation at the campus, but more importantly, the changes should enhance student safety. The first change is two-way traffic will be allowed on all campus access roads during morning arrival. This means the High School access road off …

As the calendar flips to August, thoughts start to turn to the first day of the new school year. When Andover High School opens back up for business, a brand new crop of freshmen will begin the wild, four-year (in most cases) journey that is high school. So we pose the question -- What advice would you offer to the incoming Class of 2016?

I read the statistics and I really want to know how serious the problem is. My son is in 8th grade at West Middle. He knows it goes on. How do I keep him away from it?   more ›
