Golden Warriors' Report Cards: Football

The O-Zone hands out report cards for the AHS fall athletic teams.

Welcome to the third and final part of our series looking back on the 2011 Andover High School fall athletic season. Today we look at the football team. Yesterday we featured the field hockey and volleyball teams, and on Monday we featured the soccer teams. Football Comments: Dubbing this team average would be simply criminal considering the talent on the team and the results they had. One thing is for sure, and that is the team did not live up to the expectations they set for themselves. A team that was eyeing a Super Bowl berth in Foxborough went only 7-4 and fell to some very beatable teams. After last year’s playoff berth, the Warriors took a step back. In week three, the Warriors dropped a ten-point game to Tewksbury, a team that they…

Central Pushes Past Andover to Take Thanksgiving Finale

Quarterback Matt McDermott led a 27-14 second-half comeback for the Raiders.

Central Catholic needed just one more yard to secure a two-point conversion and second-half comeback for the ages, Thursday. Senior quarterback Matt McDermott lined up in the shotgun formation and took a dive play to pay dirt to give the home team the 48-46 victory in double overtime against visiting Andover. Andover surrendered a 20-7 halftime lead to the Raiders, while McDermott went 6-for-7 in pass attempts and threw for 148 yards in the second half.   The Warriors won the toss to open the game and deferred to receive in the second half, opting to put the defense out first for momentum. And the defense delivered. After a quick first down, the opening Central drive fizzled and the Raiders were forced to try and punt. Andover junior Mark …

Dracut Shocks Andover

The Warriors fell to 5-3 Friday night in Dracut.

Dracut shocked Andover 26-10 last night. The Warriors turned the ball over six times in a game that head coach E.J. Perry would like to soon forget. Dracut scored 20 points in the second quarter, and that scoring spree was the deciding factor in the outcome of last night’s game. Andover was close at 6-2 after one quarter. Andy Coke returned a botched two point conversion play and returned it 107 yards to the house for two points that got Andover on the board. Then in the second, Andover’s defense allowed two passing touchdowns and one rushing. In the fourth quarter, Will Heikkinen caught a 20 yard touchdown pass; he has scored touchdowns in every single game this season. Andover’s postseason hopes got a bit bleak with last night’s loss but…

The game was originally scheduled to be played at 7 p.m. on Friday night but was moved to Saturday at 6 p.m due to inclement weather conditions. The two senior playmakers totaled over 250 yards from scrimmage on the night. The game began as a back and forth battle through the first half as Andover (4-2, 0-1 MVC D1) led 22-19 at the break. Warriors Come Back to Take Down North Andover

For the sixth straight year, Andover beat North Andover to open up the football season.

Last night, the Warriors calmly went into North Andover, hostile as it will ever be, and came away with a gutsy, season opening win. Andy Coke, senior superstar, put things in perspective after the Warriors’ 30-20 win. “At this point in the season they weren’t as good as us,” said the star running back. “We still respect them as a team, but we went into this one thinking we were the better team,” Coke said. Coke carried the ball 21 times for 130 yards and a touchdown. Andover faced a pair of deficits that seemed like they would spell doom for the 2011 opener. Instead, the Warriors under head coach E.J. Perry, pulled through with a character-revealing victory. “We love the Andover, North Andover rivalry,” said Perry. Andover overcame three …

Coke, Warriors Primed for Another Run

Andover's football team battles North Andover tomorrow night to start the 2011 season.

Welcome to the ninth and final installment of our Golden Warriors fall sports season preview. Today we look at the Andover High School football team. There were some bumps in the road but 2010 was a dream season for the Golden Warriors. Andover will once again face North Andover to begin the regular season. The Warriors have bested the Knights every year since 2005. Last year’s result was a 21-9 win at Andover High School. North Andover will be eager to prove their worth as they will be joining the Warriors in the Merrimack Valley Conference beginning in the fall of 2012. The Warriors were 4-1 in early October, and everything was looking peachy for new head coach EJ Perry. A pair of losses to Chelmsford and Methuen put Andover’s postseason…
