Special Town Meeting Approved for Youth Center Vote

Youth Center organizers collected over 200 signatures in support of a new youth center.

Andover voters will be meeting in December, once again, for a Special Town Meeting to vote on the construction of the proposed Cormier Youth Center. Selectmen voted 5-0 last night in favor of a Monday, Dec. 5 Special Town Meeting.  The board discussed the issue briefly before taking the unanimous vote, which also outlined a Nov. 4 date to close the warrant. Specifically, voters will be asked to support or oppose a $2 million bond to cover the remaining costs of the proposed $4 million Cormier Youth Center, which would sit behind Doherty Middle School.  According to Andover Youth Services, $2 million has already been raised privately for the new youth center. The remaining $2 million bonded over a 20-year period would cost the average …

Friends of Andover Tennis Raising Funds for Courts

The Friends of Andover Tennis hope to renovate the Andover High School tennis courts through fundraising and a rally on Oct. 1.

This press release was provided by the Friends of Andover Tennis. The Friends of Andover Tennis is a private group of tennis enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels: community activists and leaders, business leaders, parents of past and present (and future) AHS tennis players, and current AHS students, players and coaches.  Our goal is a tennis facility that our high school teams and the Andover tennis playing community can enjoy and be proud of. The existing high school courts were built 22 years ago. We are raising funds to resurface and reconfigure the AHS tennis courts, improve their leveling, remove hazardous cracks and berms, and fill in unpaved areas between the edge of the asphalt area and the fence. The renovated area with new …

Coke, Warriors Primed for Another Run

Andover's football team battles North Andover tomorrow night to start the 2011 season.

Welcome to the ninth and final installment of our Golden Warriors fall sports season preview. Today we look at the Andover High School football team. There were some bumps in the road but 2010 was a dream season for the Golden Warriors. Andover will once again face North Andover to begin the regular season. The Warriors have bested the Knights every year since 2005. Last year’s result was a 21-9 win at Andover High School. North Andover will be eager to prove their worth as they will be joining the Warriors in the Merrimack Valley Conference beginning in the fall of 2012. The Warriors were 4-1 in early October, and everything was looking peachy for new head coach EJ Perry. A pair of losses to Chelmsford and Methuen put Andover’s postseason…

Boys Cross Country Hits the Trails Next Week

Andover opens up its 2011 season against Lowell next Wednesday.

Welcome to the seventh installment of our Golden Warriors fall sports season preview. Today we look at the Andover High School boys cross country team. Simon Voorhees was last year’s top performer for the squad. At All-States in Gardner, MA last year, Voorhees finished the 2.9 mile course in 14:17.3, which was good for 17th place in the race. This year’s edition of the team will open up the season a week from tomorrow at Lowell High School. The meet gets underway at 3:30 pm. Last year against Lowell, Voorhees set a new course record of 16:24 at his home course, but Lowell's Mike Giardina bested him by two seconds on Sept. 15 of last year.  On Wednesday, Oct. 5, Andover has its first meet against Central Catholic. The Warriors will host …

Warriors Win Preseason Scrimmage

Andover field hockey takes down North Andover

It may have just been a scrimmage, but whenever Andover and North Andover take the field it's always competitive and yesterday’s field hockey clash was no exception.  In an abbreviated scrimmage, the Golden Warriors controlled the tempo throughout and beat a game, but over-matched the Scarlet Knight squad 2-0 at North Andover High School. The defending state champion Warriors imposed their will for much of the opening period but were unable to penetrate the Knights back line. Early in the second period (the game was cut into three periods of 20, 20, and 10 minutes respectively) junior Meagan Keefe was able to get the edge of her stick on the ball and roll into the goal amidst a gaggle of players to give Andover a 1-0 lead. Junior Danielle …

Golf Team Swings into Action

The AHS boys golf team gets their season underway Sept. 9.

Welcome to the third installment of our Golden Warriors fall sports season preview. Today we look at the Andover High School boys golf team. Last year’s journey for the Golden Warriors golf team ended in disappointment. In the Division 1 North Tournament at the Beverly Golf & Tennis Club last October, the Warriors were in serious contention to reach the state tournament. Andover’s combined total of 320 strokes was good for a sixth place tie with Lowell and Haverhill. Unfortunately, only the top four teams advanced into the state tournament which was held a week later at the Longmeadow Country Club. Concord-Carlisle was a stroke better than Andover last October; Wayland was two strokes better and earned the final spot in the state tourney. …

Walsh's Defense Helps Nationals Subdue Maine

Two plays at the shortstop blunt Maine's comeback bid as Andover holds on for a 5-3 win.

BRISTOL, Conn. – Andover National Little League pitcher Michael Reilly gave his teammate Daniel Walsh a little nudge as manager Paul Finn spoke of his shortstop’s ballplaying prowess. The Massachusetts state champions had just all but clinched a spot in the New England Regionals’ championship round and Walsh supplied sparkling defense and reached base in all four plate appearances to lead the way. The shortstop turned in two stellar plays Tuesday morning to blunt a late surge by Yarmouth, Maine, and the Nationals held on for a 5-3 win at Leon J. Breen Field. Andover (2-1) has one more game in the round-robin portion of the tournament – a 1 p.m. game Wednesday against Goffstown, N.H. – before the single-elimination round of four begins on …
