Andover Special Town Meeting voters approved $5.8 million to fund the further construction of the Bancroft Elementary School.
With the Bancroft Elementary School now 25 percent complete, Special Town Meeting Monday night gave the green light for spending $5.8 million more on the $44.6 million school project. The town needed more funding for the school project in order to cover unanticipated legal fees as well as higher than anticipated costs for certain stages of construction. The Town is receiving $16.7 million from the Massachusetts School Building Authority for the project in the form of a grant. Largely being funded through a debt exclusion, the $5.8 million approved Monday night should increase the average residential taxpayer's bill by $24, with the entire school project costing a $181 increase in the average residential taxpayer's bill. Town Meeting approved a $2 million contribution to the construction of a youth center.
The children of Andover will be receiving a new, 20,000 square foot youth center that will sit behind Doherty School after voters at Special Town Meeting approved a $2 million expense for the design and construction of the new facility. Over 1,500 people jammed into Andover High School for the meeting, with a large majority having to sit on stage at the Collins Center or in the cafeteria, voting from an audio feed. Andover voters spoke passionately for and against the project, which is receiving a $2.2 million private contribution through fundraising by Andover Youth Services. This press release was provided by Andover Town Clerk Lawrence Murphy. A Special Town Meeting will be held in the Town of Andover on Dec. 5 at the Andover High School Collins Center Auditorium. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. The Warrant will close Friday, Nov. 4. Anyone wishing to place an article on the Special Town Meeting warrant will need 100 signatures of registered voters in the Town. Forms can be picked up in the Town Clerk’s Office on Bartlet Street or on the website. Call the Town Clerk’s Office if you need assistance.
