Want to help the community of Andover? Ready to have some fun? Then Andover Youth Services wants you! The Andover Youth Services Believe Telethon is happening this March 14 and 15 and we need you! This fun, all-ages event is filmed at Andover High School and shown live on Andover access TV along with an online internet stream. The Telethon centers around comedy, music, challenges, guest hosts, plenty of surprises, and lots of fun for everyone involved. We also have a live auction that has featured in the past such items as Red Sox, Tickets, Patriots autographed helmets, golf clubs, vacation packages, ski passes, snowboards and plenty more awesome stuff. In conjunction with the Beautiful Campaign and its empowering signs around town, AYS is looking for nominations for an award to be given to youth who exude inner beauty and outward action.
This year, as part of the "It's a Beautiful Campaign" coordinated by Troop KBG (Kick Butt Girls,) Andover Youth Services will be presenting "Beautiful Youth Awards" at the Keep it Wild Fashion Show on Tuesday, June 19, according to AYS Youth Program Coodinator Afton Cuomo. "These awards will be an opportunity to recognize those unsung beautiful heroes (middle and high school youth) who contribute to making the community of Andover more beautiful. We are looking for nominations based on an individual's inner beauty and outward actions," she said. An email, sent recently to middle school and high school teachers asked for nominations. After twenty-three years in Andover, Merrimack Junior Theatre has closed its doors; however Andover’s wonderful tradition of youth theater is not over, as three of the members of the former Merrimack Junior Theatre Advisory Board join with Andover Youth Services to create a new theater opportunity for the youth in the Merrimack Valley. The newly formed AYS Theatre Works! will hold auditions in early September for their first production scheduled for the Fall of 2012. Rehearsals will be held in the evenings during September through November, 2012. The performance will be Nov 9th, 10th and 11th. The initial program will be for actors in grades four through eight. Youth Center organizers collected over 200 signatures in support of a new youth center.
Andover voters will be meeting in December, once again, for a Special Town Meeting to vote on the construction of the proposed Cormier Youth Center. Selectmen voted 5-0 last night in favor of a Monday, Dec. 5 Special Town Meeting. The board discussed the issue briefly before taking the unanimous vote, which also outlined a Nov. 4 date to close the warrant. Specifically, voters will be asked to support or oppose a $2 million bond to cover the remaining costs of the proposed $4 million Cormier Youth Center, which would sit behind Doherty Middle School. According to Andover Youth Services, $2 million has already been raised privately for the new youth center. The remaining $2 million bonded over a 20-year period would cost the average …
