Andover Woman May Be First in State Linked to Fungal Meningitis Outbreak

A 71-year-old Andover woman may be the first Massachusetts patient connected to the fungal Meningitis outbreak linked to a steroid shot that has now been recalled.

An elderly woman from Andover may be the first case of fungal meningitis in Massachusetts that is linked to the recalled steroid shot produced by a Framingham pharmaceutical firm at the center of a state investigation, according to an article on WBZ-Boston. The 71-year-old Andover woman reportedly received a shot of a steroid in early fall that may have been the recalled product. Department of Health spokesman said they are investigating the possible connection to recalled product of New England Compounding Center or Ameridose. “We are working in collaboration with the CDC as part of their investigation into this case, which is not a confirmed case of fungal meningitis at this time,” Kibbe said. “We have also been in close contact with the…
