Andover Patch will give each AHS varsity spring team a report card grade throughout the week. This is part three of a three part series. The Andover High School baseball volleyball and tennis teams all had strong runs in the MIAA playoffs. Let’s take a look at how they did on their report cards. Volleyball The Warriors volleyball squad started off the season on fire. They won their first four matches without losing a single game. They wound up winning six of their first seven. Then came the first of two separate three match losing streaks for Andover. The Warriors dropped consecutive matches to Chelmsford, Lawrence, and Haverhill in late April. In mid May, Andover hit another bump in the road losing to Chelmsford, Lawrence, and Haverhill …

Last year’s Golden Warriors baseball squad snuck into the playoffs. This year, they will look to make a deeper run into the Division 1 North Tournament, and it all starts on April 6 against North Andover. Malden Catholic ousted Andover last year in the preliminary round of the MIAA North Sectional Tournament. Andover came into the tournament as a long shot; they were the 19th ranked team coming into the tourney. The Warriors bowed out after a 6-2 loss that spanned two days due to rain. The highlight of the 2010 season was Andover’s win in the Lowell Spinners World Series. With a dramatic 3-2 victory over Dracut, Andover won the four-team tournament in the first year it had ever participated. On May 23 and 24, the Warriors will return to …

Andover was outmatched 3-1 by Burlington in the playoffs' first round.
Despite gaining some late-season momentum under interim head coach Scott Manty, Andover was outmatched by their first playoff opponent, Burlington High School. Andover fell to Burlington 3-1 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Division 1 North Hockey Tournament. After going down 2-0 early in the second period, the Warriors made it close with a goal from Jim Burns to make it 2-1 entereing the third. Despite having offensive opportunies throughout the third, Andover could not solve Burlington goalie Derek DeCastro. Burlington's top line of Brett Romkey, Joe Berardi and Brian Hood notched two of the Red Devils' three goals as their team punched their ticket to the next round. Burlington came out and controlled the game early on, …

The Andover girls basketball team is something else. Since the beginning of last season, head coach Jim Tildsley has lead the Lady Warriors on an unthinkable 46-4 run which included a ridiculous 30-game winning streak that overlapped the two seasons. That streak was snapped by Central Catholic; two of their four losses in the past two seasons came against Central Catholic, and Andover may have to face the Raiders en route to another state title. The Raiders are ranked at #3 in the Division I North Sectional Tournament while the Warriors are a step up at #2. A showdown between the two would occur should the teams win their first two games of the tournament, as they are fully expected to do. The Lady Warriors only have time to worry about…

The boys and girls indoor track teams were well represented at the Reggie Lewis Center yesterday in Boston. The boys came away with second place in the MIAA All-State meet while the girls placed fourth in a tie with Franklin High. Boys Take Silver Pat Farnham was a huge part of the boys’ success. He finished with a silver medal in the 300 meter run with a time of 35.97 seconds. In the mile run, Simon Vorhees came away with a fourth place finish. His endurance and blazing speed helped him to a time of four minutes and 19 seconds. Andover took gold in the 4x200 meter relay. Their time of 1:31.65 was just enough to edge out New Bedford by less than two tenths of a second. New Bedford finished in 1:31.82. Andover managed a bronze in the 4x800 …

The Lady Warriors started off a grueling stretch with a blowout victory against Lawrence High School. Nicole Boudreau, Natalie Gomez-Martinez, and Ally Fazio, the team's three co-captains, are in the midst of a four games in five days stretch. They started that endeavour in stylish fashion with a thorough 78-36 thrashing of the Lawrence High School Lancers last night. Nicole Boudreau netted 22 points. Nine of the 22 came from three-point range. Natalie Gomez-Martinez helped the cause with 12 of her own. Ally Fazio continued her inspired play with 13 points and three three-pointers on the night. With the MIAA State Tourney looming, Andover is expecting a repeat of last year's Division I State Title. Anything less would be far from …

The Brama Bull ran over the Lions last night. “I’ve been here 22 years. That’s as good a half as we’ve ever had in this gym,” said Andover head coach David Fazio of his team’s first half effort that put Andover up by 25 at the break. Senior captain Joe Bramanti dropped 30 on Chelmsford in a 76-50 thrashing of the Lions. “We tried to take him out of the game,” said Lions head Coach Charlie Micol. They simply could not. Chelmsford was forced to double-team Bramanti after he slashed easily to the basket in the first couple possessions. The double-team actually made things worse. “People want to double-team him. That’s fine. That’s four versus three everywhere else,” said Fazio. “We like those chances,” he added. “If they shoot the ball well…

The Andover High School girls hockey team needed two first period goals and nothing more to put away Newton South in a shutout at Phillips Andover rink on Monday. Lady Warriors sophomore goalie MacKenzie Dutton recorded her first shutout of the season as she stopped every shot she faced in the 2-0 victory. With 6:50 left in the first it was senior captain Jill Manning who got Andover on the board with a wrist shot, high on the glove side to beat Newton South goalie Karina Alfisher. Meagan Keefe got the assist on the goal and would assist on the Warriors’ second goal along with Jill Manning. Both line-mates had multiple point nights. Doing the honors in the final minute of the first period was Meaghan Leary, a sophomore forward, who …

The defending state champion Lady Warriors have taken the court 11 times this season and 11 times they have come away with a win. Their latest victim was the Barrington basketball team, from Barrington, Rhode Island, who made the trip to Shawsheen Road boasting a 10-0 record, the same as Andover’s Warriors. The unbeaten titans went at it on Friday night at Andover High and ultimately it was the combination of Natalie Gomez-Martinez and Nicole Boudreau that proved to be the trump card for the Warriors. The two captains combined for 46 points and 19 steals. “I think Natalie played her best game of the year today,” said Andover head coach Jim Tildsley. “Nicole, naturally, was immense,” he added. Boudreau’s 26 pointd led all scorers. Her five …
