Running Specialty Shop Opens in Andover

The specialty store for runners, walkers and triathletes, offers free gait analysis to customers.

The Greater Boston Running Company, 45 Main Street, is all about injury prevention, according to Manager Tom Poland. The new specialty store that carries shoes, apparel and gear is located at the former site of J.L. Coombs and Dahers. The Andover store, owned by the Running Specialist Group, is one of four Greater Boston locations. Runner Gene Mitchell founded the company with the opening of the Princeton Running Company in 1998. All stores are named for the region or city where they are situated. The other Greater Boston stores are located in Lexington, Newburyport and Hingham. Poland said that local runner and District Manager Steve Meinelt saw Andover as a prime location because of its Division I High School sports and local running …

VIDEO: Marathon Mom Runs for Her Son

Kim Grady will run the Boston Marathon for her 14-year old son John who suffers from Narcolepsy

When Andover mom Kim Grady discovered her son had Narcolepsy, she promised her son "would not be a victim."   Grady's son suffers from a rare form of the disease called Narcolepsy with cataplexy, which along with sleep disturbances can cause her son to lose control of his muscles and seize up as if he was having a seizure.  John, now 14, has persevered thanks in part to Grady's effort to get him to the right doctors and on the right medicine.  John has excelled in school and in outside activities including winning awards as a wrestler.  Kim Grady said she's inspired by her son's resilience and has chosen to pick up her running shoes once more to spread awareness and raise money for medical research of the disease through the non-profit …

Feaster Five Draws Record Numbers

More than 10,000 participants turned out for Andover's 23rd annual Feaster Five Road Race

Thanksgiving morning may have brought frigid weather, but that didn't stop 10,123 people from getting out and running in this year's Feaster Five Road Race. The race, consisting of both a 5K run and 5-mile run, began at the intersection of Route 133 and Main Street and looped around to finish in Brickstone Square. The event was first created in 1987 to encourage people to get out of the house on Thanksgiving for a fun, family event. However, it is also charitable effort, with registration fees benefiting the Merrimack Valley Hospice, Merrimack Valley YMCA and the Merrimack Valley Striders, the running club that officially hosts the race.
