Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Andover. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. Black Friday, Small Business Saturday: What's Your Deal?

Let us know what your business is offering customers this year, and upload photos.

Thursday is Thanksgiving, and that means the following days will be devoted to shopping. Black Friday is Nov. 23, and Small Business Saturday is Nov. 24. For some, that means rushing to the malls and big box stores to stand in line for bargains. But for many, it also means looking for local, small business shopping opportunities. The big companies have their deals advertised all over the place, but we want to give local businesses a chance to get the word out. Do you run a Andover business? What deals are you offering this Friday and Saturday to boost traffic in your store? Leave a comment and let everyone know. You can also upload photos of your store and/or merchandise to this post.

Shop Local on Small Business Saturday

Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in Andover.

Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Andover and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its third …

The spa opened September 11, after relocating from Andover Village and changing its focus and name.  The salon was known as Andover Hair and Skin Salon where Theberge started her career in 1983 as an employee. PROFILE: Andover Hockey Shop

The popular spot for hockey gear in Andover also carries equipment and apparel for all sports.

Andover Hockey Shop, 342 North Main Street, is a well-known establishment in Shawsheen Village but what some might not know is that they sell more than hockey gear, according to owner Chris Gravell.   His grandfather started the business in 1968 as a hockey shop, at the time Bobby Orr and the Bruins were “huge.” It has since evolved to include all team sports, and 15 types of Andover apparel and accessories, he explained.   While hockey remains the most popular category, the shop outfits teams and individuals from Andover and surrounding communities, according to Gravell.   He explained they carry gear and apparel for lacrosse, football, soccer, field hockey, baseball, basketball, softball and in-line skating. The shop also personalizes …
