Warrior Wrestlers Prevail Against Pentucket

Andover gained a second win in Thursday's 48-23 stomping of the Sachems.

The Andover High wrestlers came away with a decisive win Thursday against Pentucket High School. After jockeying for position with the Sachems for half of the meet, the Golden Warriors quickly pulled away with a decision by Brett Welch and a pin by Mike Tiwari. The victory was fueled by, but not due to, three consecutive forfeits by Pentucket in the 135 to 145 pound divisions. By then, however, Andover had already taken a 27-23 lead. Nick Marcotte’s decision over Ben Lane of Pentucket in the final 152-pound weight class was simply the capstone. “We were a stronger team than them,” said Andover coach Jamie Durkin. “A lot of the matches we should have won, we won.” The night began with the 160-pound division, which was filled by Andover …

Andover Wrestlers Quick to Depart in Sons of Italy Tournament

Lynch and Brito earn silver and bronze medals, but don’t receive them as Golden Warriors leave early following a ninth place finish.

Andover was quite a long-shot at the annual Sons of Italy wrestling tournament on Saturday but they did receive some medals at the end of the night. Unfortunately for the Golden Warriors, they packed up and took off before the awards ceremony even took place. After Caleb Lynch fell in the 145 pound finals, Andover boarded the bus and headed back to Shawsheen Road leaving a silver and a bronze medal at the awards table. The eleven hour tournament featured 14 brackets ranging from the 103 pound weight class all the way up to a 285 lb. bracket. Andover competed in 11 of the 14 brackets but did not meet the expectations of their head coach Jamie Durkin. When asked if he was satisfied with his squad's overall performance Durkin answered frankly…

Golden Warrior Wrestlers Heartbroken at Central Catholic

Andover fell just short in a monumental upset over 7th ranked Central Catholic.

The Golden Warriors wrestling squad fell to 1-1 on the young season after a heartbreaking loss to Central Catholic, ranked #7 in the state according to MassWrestling.com's preseason poll. The meet's lightest wrestlers battled in its biggest match. Andover, heavy underdogs, fell 39-37 in a meet that was decided in the final match between Pat Lacroix of Central Catholic and James Burke of Andover in the 112-pound weight class. Lacroix pinned Burke in the first period giving Central Catholic just enough to escape with a victory in their 2010-11 home opener. Andover had recovered from an 18-0 deficit, and went into the last match with a four point lead. "The guys wrestled great, just a couple things didn't go our way," said Andover head coach …
