Meet Paul Sanborn, Andover's New Tree Warden

With the retirement of Andover's tree warden Randy Pickersgill this past fall, a new individual has finally stepped up to the plate in his place. Andover's new tree warden is former Andover arborist Paul Sanborn.  A native of Havehrill, Sanborn was hired by Andover in 2006 to work as an arborist under Pickersgill in the Andover Tree Department.  About a month ago, Sanborn was chosen out of a wide field of candidates to fill the position, which is now the Superintendent of Parks, Grounds, Forestry and Cemetery.  Coming from a 17-year position at Chem-Lawn as a service manager, head of management training, head of Research and Development, Sanborn said he is looking forward to getting back to working with employees.  “This new job takes …

Voters Approve Zoning Change for Franciscan Center

The article passed last night at the second session of Andover Annual Town meeting will allow for an senior housing development on the grounds of the Franciscan Center in Andover.

Andover Town Meeting voters discussed at length an article to amend the zoning bylaws to make way for a senior housing complex at the Franciscan Center. With many residents making comments both for and against, in the end, the article passed with little opposition. Andover Annual Town Meeting continued tonight after getting through the first 25 articles in the 60-plus warrant. Voters also approved $600,000 to install sidewalks in various sections of town, painting of library windows and curbing, as well as an article paying  Andover's share of the cost of renovations to the Greater Lawrence Technical High School HVAC system.   Article 26 asked voters to approve a senior residential community overlay district that would pave the way for a …

Town Meeting Voters Approve $147 Million Budget, Large Expenses

Roughly 400 residents made it to Andover's Annual Town Meeting last night at the Andover High School field house.

Andover's Annual Town Meeting spent well over an hour talking about different sections of Andover's fiscal 2014 budget, one of the 61 articles on the warrant this year.  Voters eventually approved the $147.5 million budget. In addition to the budget, voters approved a list of large, one-time expenses, such as town vehicle purchases and large repair projects, called capital projects. This year capital projects totaled $2.28 million.  After subtracting fixed costs and other expenses, the the town and school budgets combined totaled $103,878,915, which represents a 3.42 percent increase from last year.  Resident Bob Pokress asked what the town is doing to start saving for the unfunded retirement liabilities it will have to pay out in future …

Tierney Talks to Doherty School Students about Working Together

Doherty Middle School students met with their congressman to talk about various issues that are affecting our state and country.

Congressman John Tierney visited the Doherty Middle School on Wednesday morning and spoke with students on a wide variety of issues. Finegold Seriously Considering 2014 Run For Statewide Office

What state office could lure Finegold give up his job as a state senator?

State Sen. Barry Finegold, D-Andover, confirmed this week that he is seriously considering a run for State Treasurer in 2014. "It's something I'm taking a serious look at," said Finegold. "I'm listening to people and taking a hard look at it. But the 2014 election is still a long way away. Right now I'm concentrating on my job as a state senator." Finegold, 42, was elected to the State Senate from the 2nd Middlesex-Esssex District (Andover, Tewksbury, Dracut, Lawrence) in 2010 and was re-elected in November 2012, defeating Paul Adams.
