After last month's Boston Marathon bombing, school officials aren't taking any chances.
North Shore colleges and high schools will increase security for graduation ceremonies due to the Boston Marathon bombing, the Salem News is reporting. Many schools, like Salem State University and Gordon College, will have bag searches and increased number of security personnel. On April 15, two bombs were detonated at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 170 others. Since then, security has been a concern at large events in the Boston area. "There will be a lot of eyes around. We will all be aware and watching what will be going on around us," Joanne Waldner, assistant to the president at Endicott College, told the Salem News. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Andover High School's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. On Saturday, March 9, St. Augustine School of Andover will host its 6th Annual Spring Extravaganza. The event, long heralded as the school’s major fundraiser of the year, has gained tremendous support from various Merrimack Valley businesses which have donated products, services, and gifts, to aid the school in reaching its ultimate goal: a gymnasium.To date, St. Augustine School has never had a gymnasium. Students and faculty instead have leveraged a small black top surface and coinciding grass playing field, in addition to the Knights of Columbus Hall located two blocks away, for physical education during the school year. The US Department of Energy's National Science Bowl has roughly 1,400 students battling wits across the country, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

A team of middle school students from Andover is participating in a regional competition of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science’s National Science Bowl in Nashua, N.H. next weekend. The Office of Science began this competition to interest today’s youth in pursuing careers in science and math.
