Youth Center Presentation on Thursday

Town officials and committee members will present a concept plan for the new youth center at the Public Safety Center Thursday evening.

The Andover Youth Center Building Committee will conduct a presentation on the concept plans for the Cormier Youth Center to be located behind the Doherty Middle School on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Training Room at the Andover Public Safety Center on North Main Street. The AYC Building Committee will review the preliminary plans for the Cormier Youth Center and address questions from the public. Please use the Public Safety Center's main entrance - the Training Room is located on the right off of the main foyer entrance. Parking is available in the public parking lot behind the Memorial Hall Library. The presentation will be cablecast live on Channel 22 for Comcast customers and Channel 45 for Verizon customers.

Town Clerk: Special Town Meeting Details

Town Clerk Lawrence Murphy provides details on the upcoming Special Town Meeting.

This press release was provided by Andover Town Clerk Lawrence Murphy. A Special Town Meeting will be held in the Town of Andover on Dec. 5 at the Andover High School Collins Center Auditorium. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. The Warrant will close Friday, Nov. 4. Anyone wishing to place an article on the Special Town Meeting warrant will need 100 signatures of registered voters in the Town. Forms can be picked up in the Town Clerk’s Office on Bartlet Street or on the website.  Call the Town Clerk’s Office if you need assistance. The last day to register to vote for non-registered voters is Friday, Nov. 25, 2011. The Town Clerk’s Office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. for voter registration. Special Town Meeting Approved for Youth Center Vote

Youth Center organizers collected over 200 signatures in support of a new youth center.

Andover voters will be meeting in December, once again, for a Special Town Meeting to vote on the construction of the proposed Cormier Youth Center. Selectmen voted 5-0 last night in favor of a Monday, Dec. 5 Special Town Meeting.  The board discussed the issue briefly before taking the unanimous vote, which also outlined a Nov. 4 date to close the warrant. Specifically, voters will be asked to support or oppose a $2 million bond to cover the remaining costs of the proposed $4 million Cormier Youth Center, which would sit behind Doherty Middle School.  According to Andover Youth Services, $2 million has already been raised privately for the new youth center. Do you think it is worth holding a Special Town Meeting for the proposed youth center?

Andover Youth Services has developed a plan over years for a brand new youth center and even raised half of the $4 million cost of the facility. While proponents claim that it will raise the average tax bill by a maximum of $14 dollars annually, others have questioned whether it would be worth taking on the expense where the Bancroft School is coming and the Town Yard project is looming.  However, is it worth holding a Special Town Meeting to vote on this youth center? the youth foundation has tried for years to erect a building for not only the youth but the community as a whole to use. Land has been looked into, money raised, but it always comes down to that final vote when people forgot what is truly the issue and only talk about costs.
