This is NOT a new position. We've had a superintendent of parks, cemeteries, playing fields- and TREES- all along. Paul is replacing the previous "warden".

My faith in Andover's green credentials is severely shaken by the approval of new-paving plans for the coming Youth Center's surroundings. (This was presented to Town Meeting as a Doherty School issue, but the Youth Center is clearly the driver.) The Town Meeting vote on funds authorization was extremely close, and if more people had been aware of the impact on the Bartlet St.neighborhood I suspect the question would have failed.
The plan to bulldoze a loop drive and several parking spaces into the serene little park in front of the Doherty is an abomination, an inexcusable assault on a residential neighborhood which endures enough noise and traffic as it is.The park has served since the school's construction in the early 50's as a welcome and necessary buffer between school zone and homes, and its destruction would be a crime against the Bartlet homeowners and the downtown greenscape as a whole.
(Although the design people insist no healthy trees will be cut, how long can those beautiful mature specimens survive with their roots excavated and paved over?) An even more destructive paving plan was submitted once before, and rightly shot down. This version should be vetoed as well, or our "Tree City" designation is a travesty.

Crocuses have been out for some time, wherever the rabbit plague has not wiped them out (Late this year because of lingering snow cover). Also the lilac buds are visibly swelling, as are those on red maples. Snowdrops have been blooming for awhile, though they seem to be planted less than formerly and can be hard to find.
Cardinals have been singing for weeks, although they tend to jump the gun every year anyway.as do the titmice, but the chickadees are still holding off. I'll believe it's Spring when they start calling "feebee" instead of "dee dee dee"!

I see that the youth center is listed as a large plus for Andover's livability. Somewhere else, not squeezed between 2 wetland areas with large drainage and parking issues, it would be. For its neighbors on Bartlet and Whittier Place, it's a huge minus. The Whittier residents are fearing exacerbation of the Rogers Brook flooding they live with already, and because of the loss of parking behind Doherty School the Bartlet neighbors are faced with the partial paving of the beautiful small park in front of the school which has served as a buffer between their residential land and he school zone. The design people insist there will be no cutting of any but "dead" trees, but how long will the live ones last with excavation and paving over their roots? The plan shows pavement right up to the trunks of several trees---
This inexcusable assault on the street's environment was proposed once before, and rightly shot down. It should be again.
The center should never have been planned for this marginal land, but since it seems to be a done deal the proponents could at least show some consideration for the residents who will have to live with it.

Obama did not promise to singlehandedly prevent climate change (as if any one person , or for that matter one nation, could). He promised to acknowledge the looming crisis and work on mitigation, which he has done. In contrast, too many Republican know-nothings are still in denial.

Didn't notice this one; probably subconsciously attributed it to something else. However the younger of our 2 cats was generally freaked all evening, didn't want to be held.
Andover experiences 3 types of noticeable quakes, I've found-- the first a rumbling like a monster plow going by with the blade set too low (or just a big truck, as above); the second a brief sharp window-rattling boom that sends people running downstairs to check the boiler; and the third and rarer type a slight sideways shift that feels as if someone had yanked a rug under your feet.
All interesting, and reminders that in addition to distant quakes felt here we might get a jolt from our very own local fault!
