Andover Sees Unemployment Rate Drop in November

As the state's rate increased, Andover bucked the trend and had impressive numbers.

We've heard the news about the unemployment rate rising last month, but locally it was a different story.

Andover's November unemployment rate was an impressive 4.7 percent, down significantly from 5.7 percent a month before, according to the Massachusetts Department of Labor and Workforce Development, which released those local numbers this week. That's even down from November 2012, when the rate was looking good at 5 percent.

Statewide, for the first time in six years, the state's unemployment rate spiked higher than the nation's in November, at 7.1 percent.

The state actually added 6,500 jobs in November. In fact, in most industries statewide there was either job decrease or very small job growth. For details of each labor market, visit the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

In a few weeks we will be able to see if the Christmas season helped stabilize the state's unemployment rate and what affect that may have on the local numbers.
